To a certain extent, our prayers have been answered. At ELS we inundate ourselves with news on all things green from niche media channels around the globe, and are attuned to the how rapidly these information sources have grown recently. So we sometimes get confused as to how prevalent this info is in the mainstream press.

Well this announcement makes it rather obvious. The extent to which a greener consciousness can be didactically illuminated in a sitcom remains to be seen, and we are optimistic that the portrayal won't be too "greenwashed." However, this has got to be good news, right? Let's just hope this isn't a string of puff pieces, but rather a serious look into changes that are happening and what individuals and companies can to do make a difference.

Anselm Doering, Founder of EcoLogic Solutions was recently interviewed by NPR’s Marketplace. He shared his point of view about carbon emission offsets, a hot & contentious topic. Click here for the link to the mp3.

The carbon emission offset market creates a tradable permit scheme for carbon credits. A credit gives the owner the right to emit one tonne of carbon dioxide, and these credits are generated through carbon saving projects in companies and other institutions. They provide a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by giving them monetary value, namely, a cost to polluters and a revenue source for those cutting back.

Anselm briefly explained how organizations could today be reducing their carbon imprint without having to purchase credits (if they can afford them) to feel better possibly about polluting as much as they were before.

There are too many other loose ends for the success of such a trading scheme, such as shifty accounting practices, or lack of adequate pressure to further reduce their imprint for the companies that can afford to sell the credits.

Greening the Greens

ELS was invited to be the sole sponsor of a Greening the Golf Course event hosted by Mashantucket Pequot tribe & Foxwoods Resort at the request of Senator & Presidential candidate, Chris Dodd.

ELS shared its voice with the senator and other dignified attendees about options golf courses and other operations have to become more sustainable. Information was available on sustainable business practices, organic fertilizers, alternative pesticides and water treatment applications to everyday cleaning and maintenance chemicals.

In picking up our local NYC GreenMap the other day, I came across a succinct definition of sustainability, one that nicely articulates some of our principal values:

Sustainability - a balance of environmental integrity, social equity and economic vitality

Here's our take:
- Environmental Integrity: The "leave this campsite cleaner than the way you found it" mentality
- Social Equity: Great synergy can be found in fostering and embracing diversity
- Economic Vitality: This is capitalism. That which does not break even, does not last.

An espousal of these concepts gets to our core. We wish you a sustainable weekend.

"Green is the new Red, White, and Blue"

While the American media has the seemingly limitless capacity to beat a story to death, we would like to see the thesis posited by Thomas Friedman a few weeks ago in the NY Times magazine bear some of that aggression. He argues that America's addiction to oil has financed the world's jihadi terrorism, and that the solution to that conflict therefore lies in dedicating itself to becoming the greenest nation in the world. How poignantly this assertion resonates among those of us who aren't the die-hard treehuggers that we are here at ELS remains to be seen (c'mon American media, do your thing...), but for our part we are green anew. Cheers to paradigm shifts!

Idle computers needlessly waste energy

By simply turning computers off when not in use, significant reductions in energy are possible. This is such an easy and often-overlooked way for everyone to reduce their environmental impact.

A new study by the British newspaper The Independent claims that computers contribute to global warming. By leaving computers running overnight, over £100m (almost $200b) in electricity is wasted by offices in the United Kingdom each year.

To add to the evidence, National Public Radio suggusts over $1 billion dollars in electricity is wasted each year in the United States alone by simply leaving computer monitors on when they are not being used.

Even when the main computer is turned off, energy is still wasted if power adapters are plugged into an outlet. The Smart Power Strip (see picture on the left) detects when the primary user of power is switched off. The Strip then cuts the power to peripheral appliances like fax machines and printers that continue to drain power. For $39.95, the manufactures claim the Strip pays for itself in energy saving. Did you know that many of today's hybrid cars can get up to 68 miles per gallon? Ever wonder how these new cars stay so efficient?

Each company is experimenting with new engine arrangements to maximize efficiency. Honda uses a smaller, more efficient 1.0 liter cylinder engine for most driving needs but adds another special 13 horsepower engine for those times when peak performance is key. Companies like Ford have equipped hybrids with special fuel cells that generate energy from deceleration. When you need that extra punch, the cells kick in the stored energy.

The Hondo Civic Hybrid has been ranked the greenest car on the market by yahoo. See yahoo's 100 greenest cars.

Also of interest, Toyota and Ford are developing gas/electric hybrids currently called plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, or PHEVs. Supposedly 100 mpg PHEVs are within reach in the next few years. See the full article here.

Why are alkylphenol ethoxylates still in many detergents?

Alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs), common ingredients in industrial chemicals and many household cleaners such as liquid laundry detergent are endocrine disruptors and probable carcinogens.

Basically, strong evidence suggests this artificial compound mimics the hormone estrogen. The compound does not break down easily in water and even the small traces that are found all over the industrialized world create odd estrogen levels in fish and birds. In humans, the use of APEs, most commonly in cleaning chemicals, results in lowered sperm count in men (APEs are actually used as a spermicidal lubricant in Europe) and breast cancer in women.

Humans may be exposed to APEs through:

absorption through skin from shampoos, cosmetics, spermicidal lubricants and domestic and industrial detergents.
contaminated drinking water, extracted from polluted rivers.
inhalation and ingestion from pesticide sprays.
contamination of food from fields spread with sewage sludge containing alkylphenols.

See “An Environmental Assessment of Alkylphenol Ethoxylates and Alkylphenols,” a paper published in 1995 by A. Michael Warhurst, PhD for the scientific research behind this environmental problem.

Since scientists like Professor Warhurst recommended a complete ban of APEs in 1995, why is this surfactant still in use a decade later? In fact, evidence that these chemicals are dangerous has been percolating since the 1930s! Although European and UK manufacturers have been voluntarily replacing the compound (UK companies voluntarily banned APEs in laundry detergent back in 1978), in the United States, Big Chem has been aggressively lobbying to prevent any action against this dangerous and totally unnecessary surfactant.

Wal Mart--green goad or greenwasher?

The CEO of Walmart has been invited to NYC to receive congrats from American bigwigs.

Reuters reports

Hollywood executives and media figures are set to give a green thumbs-up Monday evening to Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Chief Executive Lee Scott, with an award for his commitment to the environment, despite the consistent criticism aimed at his company's record.

With a special concert from Adult Contemporary fav the Eagles, the Weinstein Brothers of Hollywoodland and their assorted Manhattan counterparts are rewarding Lee Scott for making sustainability a "key corporate theme."

So how should the treehugger community interpret this overture from one of the world's largest corporations and biggest private employer in the United States?

With cautious cajolery or conniption?

Currently only a small handfull of US states have elected Greens in the legislature.

Investment in public transit creates more sustainable NYC

A Newsday article reports that an increase in Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) ridership has outgrown population growth in the New York City region. While the metro population has increased by 7% in the last ten years, the ridership on MTA trains and buses has increased by 36% in the same time period.

MTA Chairman Peter Kalikow offers this explanation.

"Commuters have overwhelmingly responded to MetroCard discounts, new trains and buses, cleaner stations, reduced crime, and better on-time performance."

Clearly the investment in public transportation has caused an increase in ridership and made New York a more sustainable city. Listen up public transit laggards like Minneapolis. If you build it (and keep the price reasonable) they will come.

Why not take the bus to school?

So much for walking 10 miles uphill in the sleet and snow to school. Apparently today's families feel entitled to drive their kids to school. A recent article Gas prices mean more students take bus suggests, however, that skyrocketing gas prices have caused some suburbanites to start (gasp!) putting their kin on the bus.

Parent Patricia Israel expresses a view shared by many when weighing economic and environmental costs. The article explains:

She sees [having her twins ride the bus] as environmentally sound transportation that reduces traffic on the streets and at the school.

It also saves money on gas for her sport utility vehicle. "We're looking at getting a hybrid," Israel said. "Every time I fill up the gas tank, it's like $75."

This parent's quote implies that saving the environment is a nice side benefit but the real motivating factor for change is the money she wastes on her SUV.

If Americans had gauged economic AND environmental costs together we would not see such unsustainable consumption and development patterns in our cities and their suburbs

But this is old news.

In America, development has become so sprawled that taking public transportation does not seem feasible. Not everywhere can be like Brooklyn where traffic, construction and New York drivers keep people on the subway. Nonetheless, a little more foresight can surely lead to improvement if cities (and the individual drivers within them) start taking sustainability seriously.

But come on folks. The city provides a free school bus for a reason--take advantage! Perhaps your children will value public transportation and fix the mistakes of our generation.

If you were riding public transportation to work this morning in NYC (I hope you weren't hogging the highways with your Hummer!) you may have noticed a little article in the Metro newspaper entitled It’s getting easier to be green:
City Council launches initiative to encourage more eco-friendly businesses.

We do appreciate the City Council's attempts to "make it easier to go green." Yesterdays initiative will help "eco-friendly" contractors and architects connect with local manufacturers of greener alternatives to carpeting and light bulbs.

All this hoopla precedes Local Law 86's implemenation this January. That will pump $12 billion into green buildings funded by the City.

However, while building a green building is an important start, true green buildings must be updated and maintained with the best green technology. Too few "green" projects currently use safer, green cleaning chemicals. A building may be "green" on the outside but continue to poison the planet and workers on the inside.

According to a study quoted in the article by the New York Industrial Retention Network, 87 percent of businesses said they would go green if given resources. That is why NYIRN is pushing for green tax credits to proactive companies.

Which is all fine if it spurs some green purchasing by NYC businesses but it cannot be an excuse for inaction. In fact, most of EcoLogic Solutions' Deep Green™ cleaning technologies are cheaper than the traditional cleaning chemicals currently used by too many building maintainance staffs.
